Melatonin is in fact a natural hormone that is produced by the pineal gland that can be found in the brain. This is the gland that is accountable for administering the cycle of the sleep due to its secreting the melatonin once it is dark and decreases the production of this hormone during the day. The production of melatonin is essential so that people will receive the sleep that they need, melatonin supplements are employed as a means to cure insomnia and sleeplessness not only for adults but for children as well.

Children may know of melatonin as a pill that is taken by adults to treat jet lag. Nevertheless it has turned into a usual practice to provide melatonin for children who experience insomnia or other sleep disturbances. Furthermore, melatonin has been observed to be efficient for inducing sleep in kids who are identified with neurological disorders such as ADHD, autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and many others. Nevertheless, debates regarding the safety of melatonin are still ongoing and countries like England and Australia are against these ideas of providing melatonin for children that have sleep disorders.

Melatonin has undergone much research but only a few studies are done based on children. Although studies held, have reported that it is in fact a safe means of encouraging kids to sleep, most of these studies were done with children who experience neurological disorders. The children that are considered autistic and those with ADHD can have difficulty sleeping or falling asleep. By giving melatonin to help instigate the sleep cycle it is usually able to work wonders. Melatonin for children that have ADHD, autism and even for those who are visually harmed works due to production of a hormone that can be minimal and possibly absent in them.

Separate from this, even the parents of children that are considered normal and suffering from sleeping troubles have said that providing their children tiny doses of melatonin have aided in lessening the night time difficulty of placing their child to sleep. Several have also said that children who take melatonin seem to be new and attentive during the day as they acquire a good and unobstructed sleep during the night. But, although many people have noticed the advantages of melatonin for children, most doctors and sleep experts are not persuaded on recommending this supplement for young children.

The main cause why health practitioners do not support the employment of melatonin for children with sleep disorders is due to research not being fully proven regarding the melatonin side effects to children that are considered healthy. Many medical specialists debate that there has been little research that has proven taking melatonin is an efficient means of curing sleep disorders for children who do not have any disabilities. On contrast to that, there are also studies that were held by several experts that determined that there were several side effects from giving melatonin to children. There are children that from a young age were already being given melatonin and they experienced nightmares and in some cases tiredness and drowsiness. This can be a result of too high of a dosage of melatonin or that the child doesn’t need any melatonin supplements.
